Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told reporters at the White House today that negotiations around the Republicans’ long-anticipated tax bill are “going much better than I would’ve thought when I took office on January 28th,” striking an optimistic tone on one of President Donald Trump’s trademark legislative priorities.
House Speaker Mike Johnson met with Trump at the White House yesterday afternoon, after which the speaker told reporters that the legislation will “solve a lot of problems” and provide a “turbo boost for the economy.”
Bessent left a separate meeting with GOP leaders on Capitol Hill insisting that House and Senate Republicans are moving “in lockstep” on tax cuts.
The Treasury secretary today credited the president’s leadership for uniting Republicans on Capitol Hill, calling yesterday’s session at the White House “a very good meeting,” while telling reporters: “The tax bill is moving forward.”
