Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will join the White House press briefing as Trump marks 100 days in office
This morning, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will appear at the White House press briefing as the Trump administration marks the first 100 days of its second term this week, promoting what it sees as its achievements.
Yesterday, President Donald Trump’s border czar Tom Homan appeared at the briefing, where he highlighted the administration’s efforts to secure the border.
Here were some of the key moments:
Mass deportation: Homan told CNN’s Priscilla Alvarez from the briefing room that the Trump administration deported 139,000 undocumented immigrants since the beginning of the president’s second term.
Mistakenly deported man: The border czar told reporters at that he does not accept that the administration erred in deporting Kilmar Abrego Garcia to an mega-prison in El Salvador. “First of all, I don’t accept the term error,” Homan said. “There is an oversight. There was a withholding order, but things have changed. The facts surrounding the withholding order have changed. He is now a terrorist.”
Noem’s bag theft: Homan said yesterday that the person who stole Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s Gucci bag last week was “in the country illegally.”
US citizen children: The Trump administration defended its decision to remove three US citizen children — including a 4-year-old undergoing treatment for metastatic cancer —who were taken to Honduras with their mothers after the women were deported last week. In a court filing, the Trump administration claims the mother of 2-year-old requested to take her child with her to Honduras citing a handwritten note allegedly written in Spanish.
More on immigration: Trump also signed an executive order that will step up his administration’s immigration crackdown attempts. The order will direct the Department of Homeland Security and the Justice Department to provide a list of sanctuary cities not complying with federal immigration laws, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said at the press briefing yesterday.
